Chapter 19
Arrangements
Something shifts after I join Sascha and our master in bed. I’ve never been involved with any of my masters in that capacity. Certainly they’ve fucked me. Whether it was out of convenience, or boredom, or to assert their power over me, most of my masters have taken that opportunity and invited their associates to do the same.
With Cashiel, it’s different. He doesn’t love me the way he loves Sascha; he barely even knows me, and he’s far above pretending. But it’s not about power or humiliation with him. He enjoyed it, enjoyed seeing Sascha explore, enjoyed seeing me relax a little. In a strange way, it makes me more comfortable around him.
When I overhear him setting up a meeting with his lawyer a few days later, I push aside the reluctance I’ve had since the talk show. I find him in his office, Sascha busy working in another room.
“Master, there’s something I need to tell you.”
He glances up at me, like he wants to spend as little time speaking to me as possible. Sascha explained that he gets too intense with his work. As usual, Sascha knows him best.
I push through the hesitation, the years of training that scream at me to shut my mouth. “At the talk show, it wasn’t just people out to hurt you. One of the men who rushed the stage, the one who left that bruise… I knew him.”
Cash nods. “Go on.”
I calm myself by remembering that he’s not the type to just kill me and dump the body somewhere. If anything, Sascha would never forgive him. “He’s a member of the 27th Street Gang, one of my former master’s associates. The one who threatened to kill me if I didn’t give him information for the Argova family.”
My master frowns, a look of unrestrained annoyance crossing his face. “You should have told me immediately.”
“Yes, sir.” I’m usually good at judging my masters’ moods, how severely they’ll punish me, but I get nothing from Cash. It’s almost worse.
“Well?” he asks. “What do we do about it? I’m certain there’s a reason you’ve told me about it now.”
I nod, hiding my relief out of habit. Relief shows you are afraid of something; fear makes you weak. “I know you’re meeting with Ms. Edson later today. With her ties to the Argova family, I thought she might be able to set up a meeting, to put something in place. The 27th Street Gang wouldn’t go against the wishes of the Argova family.”
“All right.”
I wait for the threats, the conditions, the expected payment. I wait to be reminded of my failures.
“Go get Sascha for me. I’d like to see how he’s coming with what he’s got planned. Make sure we have everything ready for the lawyer when she comes.”
“Yes, sir,” I reply. I know I shouldn’t feel so relieved, but I do.
I compose myself by the time I retrieve Sascha, and he doesn’t notice a thing.
While he and Cash talk, I am quiet, relaxing and not paying much attention.
